Who can use Hatch Hill
Hatch Hill serves Augusta and the towns that contract with it: Chelsea, Farmingdale, Gardiner (including South Gardiner, but not West Gardiner), Hallowell, Manchester, Pittston, Randolph and Whitefield. Residents, businesses and agencies in those towns can use it with a valid permit.
If you live in Sidney, Waterville, Winslow, Winthrop or another nearby town, your town has its own arrangement. Check your town’s page before you drive over.
Permits and the 3-trip pass
Every vehicle needs a Hatch Hill permit. A residential vehicle (car, pickup, van or SUV) is $15, and vehicle permits are good for two calendar years. You can buy one at the Hatch Hill scale house or at the Tax Collector’s office on the second floor of Augusta City Hall, 16 Cony Street. A temporary permit is $25 and lasts up to 15 days.
Augusta residents can skip the permit with a 3-trip pass: three trips a calendar year, paying the normal tipping fees, with proof of residency. Someone you hire to take your things to Hatch Hill can’t use your pass.
- Bring a driver’s license, car registration or utility bill for the 3-trip pass.
- Buy the permit before your first load, or at the scale house.
- Plan on tipping fees either way: a pass or permit is not free disposal.
Hours and location
Hatch Hill is at 112 Hatch Hill Road in Augusta. It’s open Tuesday through Saturday, 8 a.m. to 4 p.m., and closed Sunday, Monday and federal and state holidays. The phone number is 207-626-2440.
What it costs at the scale
Loads are weighed at the scale. These rates come from the city’s fee list effective Sept. 1, 2024. As an example, 300 pounds of household rubbish comes to about $16 at the scale, on top of the permit.
- Rubbish: $105 a ton (5.25 cents a pound), $12 minimum, plus a $2-a-ton state tax.
- Mixed construction and demolition debris: $125 a ton, $15 minimum, plus a $5-a-ton state tax.
- Brush and natural wood: $40 a ton, $8 minimum.
- Scrap metal and white goods: $30 a ton, $6 minimum; residents pay $25 more for each fridge or other appliance with refrigerant.
- Car and light-truck tires: $4 each for up to 7.
- Old tube (CRT) TVs and monitors: $3 each.
- Free: residential single-stream recycling, leaves, yard waste and Christmas trees.
What doesn’t go to Hatch Hill
Household hazardous waste doesn’t go in your Hatch Hill load. The city sends residents to Maine Environmental Depot for that.
When hiring it out makes sense
Hiring a hauler makes sense when you don’t have a permit or a truck, the job is several trips, or the heavy pieces are in a basement or up a flight of stairs. We load everything, haul it away, and you approve the price before we start.
Our prices start at $150, and a full 5×10 trailer load starts at $400. Weight, stairs and long carries, and extra loads change the price, so text a few photos for a quote.
