Doing it yourself
Where bulky waste goes in Kennebec County
Every town here handles bulky items differently. This is where furniture, mattresses and appliances go if you haul them yourself. Your town page has the hours and fees.
- Hatch Hill landfill in Augusta takes bulky waste from Augusta, Chelsea, Farmingdale, Gardiner (not West Gardiner), Hallowell, Manchester and Randolph. Every vehicle needs a permit ($15 for a residential vehicle; Augusta residents can use a 3-trip pass instead), and loads are charged by weight. It is open Tuesday through Saturday, 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Hatch Hill hours, permits and fees →
- Sidney, Readfield (also Fayette and Wayne), Winthrop, Windsor, China (also Palermo), Vassalboro, Oakland and Belgrade run their own transfer stations. Each needs a sticker or permit, and bulky items are charged per item or by weight.
- Waterville and Winslow don’t run transfer stations. Both send residents with furniture, mattresses, appliances, tires and demolition debris to Pine Tree Waste on Lafleur Road in Waterville, where fees may apply, and point them to AIM Recycling in Oakland for freon appliances. Planning your pickup?
Can I use another town’s transfer station?
Usually not. Most Kennebec County transfer stations are for their own residents and check stickers or vehicle registrations, and Hatch Hill only takes Augusta and the towns that contract with it. We can haul from any of our towns.
Which towns charge by weight?
Hatch Hill weighs every load. Windsor charges 20 cents a pound for trash, bulky waste and debris, and China weighs anything that isn’t kitchen trash. Most of the other stations charge per item for couches, mattresses and appliances.
Do you serve every address in this region?
Availability depends on the exact address, job size, and route. Text your town and project photos so we can confirm.
Can you provide a quote from photos?
Photos often let us give a useful starting estimate. Large, heavy, or demolition projects may need an on-site look before a firm quote.
Do you offer same-day service?
Same-day and next-day openings may be available when our route and schedule allow.
